Who is Adam Umbach?

Adam Umbach is an American contemporary artist whose playful paintings explore nostalgia, memory, and personal symbolism. Born in Chicago in 1986, Adam Umbach currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. From an early age, Umbach was captivated by the art masters at the Art Institute of Chicago—an influence that ultimately led him to earn a BFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin. After experiencing rejection during graduate school, Umbach pursued an unconventional path, finding mentorship, opportunities, and success through perseverance.

Umbach’s work is rooted in coastal imagery, inspired by his time living in mid-coast Maine and New York's East Hampton. His subjects—rubber ducks, teddy bears, pink flamingos, and toy boats—may be drawn from personal experience but are rendered in a way that evokes shared memory. He often paints with his non-dominant hand to emphasize imperfection and spontaneity, channeling the freedom and uncertainty of childhood. This approach connects directly to the concept of mark making—the lines, textures, and gestures that reveal the artist’s physical presence on the canvas.
