David Yarrow at Carousel Fine Art in Miami, Atlanta and Nashville

David Yarrow is a Scottish photographer who goes where the picture is. Onto the ground in front of wild animals. Into a mountain-road scene with a wolf beside a woman at the wheel of a vintage Cadillac. Into a remake of Cindy Crawford’s 1992 Pepsi commercial. His photographs are large, mostly black and white, and built like film stills, which is why people stop walking when they see one.

Collectors have noticed. He is one of the best-selling fine art photographers in the world. Wild Encounters, with a foreword by Prince William, was named Amazon’s Art Book of the Year, and its royalties go to the conservation charity Tusk. His prints have appeared at Sotheby’s, and a print of Wolves of Wall Street sold for $200,000 at Art Miami.

Three cities, three ways in

Miami

Miami is where a lot of collectors first met a Yarrow, because Art Miami is where he has shown for years and where Wolves of Wall Street changed hands. Collectors who came to know him at the fair now have a gallery in the city that represents him, at 6737 NE 3rd Ave, which means a place to ask about editions, sizes and framing without waiting for December.

Atlanta

Atlanta has spent the summer with him. Maradona (1986) hung at Buckhead Village for The Beautiful Game, our World Cup exhibition. Spring in Aspen went up on a billboard at Peachtree Road and West Paces Ferry Road, the front door of Buckhead Village, with a wolf in a Cadillac above Peachtree Road traffic. Yarrow Haus put six of his photographs into Yebo and Lion’s Head for the season. Representation means the conversation can continue after the shows come down.

Nashville

Yarrow has been here before. In October 2016 his photographs hung for a month at Tinney Contemporary, and he told NewsChannel 5 that “in a world where there has been an information overload, there’s no room for boring photos.” Ten years on, Carousel’s new gallery at 469 Chestnut Street brings him back to the city. It opens its doors on November 1, with the grand opening on November 5.

Nashville makes its living from three-minute stories. A photographer who builds an entire story into a single frame should find the audience already waiting.

What to know before you collect one

Yarrow’s prints are signed, limited editions, and the details vary by image: the size of the edition, which number you are buying, when it was printed. There is no published catalogue raisonné for his work, so the selling gallery’s records are the main way a print is verified. Ask for edition number, print date and provenance in writing, and keep them with the work. That is a large part of why it matters to buy through a gallery that represents the artist.

The scale is part of the decision. His pieces are made for walls, and a large black-and-white photograph changes how a room feels. If you are working with a designer or buying for a project, our team can help with sizing and framing, and our Bring the Gallery to You service lets you see a piece at home before you decide.
