Zhuang Hong Yi

Biography

WHO IS ARTIST HONG-YI ZHUANG?

Hong-yi Zhuang is considered one of China's most influential artists. Best known for his intricate "flowerbed" paintings, Zhuang creates his works by folding many small pieces of rice paper. Folding these different colored rice papers into tiny blossoms, Zhuang creates a stunning illusion of moving, transforming color.

Zhuang's artistic technique results in an incredible dynamic effect that involves the viewer; through their movement, the artwork comes to life. Walking around the work, the colors of the rice paper flowers flow and evolve.

Working in both Beijing and the Netherlands, Hong-yi's work incorporates both his Chinese background and European influences. The artist Zhuang marries his admiration for the Dutch tulip fields with his Chinese culture through his use of traditional Chinese materials like rice paper.

Zhuang's use of folded colored rice paper signifies more than simple aesthetics; the flora motifs symbolize prosperity and optimism. However, the universal language of color and dynamics in Zhuang's art allows the viewer to interpret the works in various ways.

Artist Hong-yi Zhuang's innovative technique and dynamic effects have earned him an extensive reputation. Participating in hundreds of exhibitions in both museums and galleries spanning the globe, Zhuang's achievements include participation in the 2013 Venice Biennale.
