  • Step Inside Palm Beach Gallery Carousel Fine Art

At Carousel Fine Art's Palm Beach gallery in the NORA District, the current curation turns on two very different ways of building a surface.

Gregory Watin works in fragments, translating the textures of Paris and other cities into layered mixed media compositions assembled from photography, wood, plexiglass, and found material. Eric Alfaro works in accumulation, building dense impasto florals in oil and acrylic that draw comparisons to Monet without ever quite settling into imitation of him.

Now at Carousel Fine Art: Gregory Watin and 30 Miniatures

    the Architecture of the Overlooked

Gregory Watin starts with a camera, not a canvas. The French artist photographs weathered buildings, peeling signage, and the accidental compositions that a city produces without meaning to, then builds outward from those images into layered collages of wood, plexiglass, cardboard, and paper. He works quickly and by instinct, adding material in a single sustained pass rather than revising over time, which gives the finished surfaces their particular charge: structure and spontaneity sitting in the same frame, refusing to fully resolve into either.

On view in Palm Beach is Installation of 30 Miniatures (2024), a mixed media work on wood and plexiglass built from thirty individual panels. Watin has returned to the installation format repeatedly across his practice, but the miniature scale here does something the larger single-panel pieces don't: it turns an urban fragment into a grid, then lets the grid behave like a skyline.

On View: Eric Alfaro's Love Letter and Blue Night

Eric Alfaro trained classically, at the Academy of Arts in Havana.  What he paints now doesn't look classical. He works in oil and acrylic, building color and form with brushes and spatulas until the paint sits up off the canvas in dimensional ridges, a technique that has earned him the nickname "the Modern-Day Monet" among collectors who follow his work. The finished piece carries both the discipline of observation and the freedom of a painter who has stopped needing to prove his technique.

Two works are on view in Palm Beach. Blue Nights is a floral still life in royal blue and cobalt tones, a vase of blooms rendered with the impasto density that has become Alfaro's signature. Love Letter extends the same still life practice into more intimate territory, part of a body of work built around domestic and romantic subjects that Alfaro returns to across multiple series. Cuban-American and based in the United States, Alfaro's work is held in private collections across more than thirty countries, including the Lincoln Center Orchestra's collection in New York, and has been published in CdeCuba Art Magazine and Four Seasons Magazine.
