J. Margulis
Margulis merges geometric abstraction, kinetic principles, and sculptural photography to challenge spatial perception, redefine materiality, and create a dynamic interplay of light, color, and form.
PerceptionS of A Visionary
J. Margulis is a pioneering contemporary artist whose dynamic fusion of geometric abstraction, kinetic principles, and sculptural photography challenges the boundaries of visual perception. His innovative practice merges two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, seamlessly intertwining acrylic 3D sculptures with striking photographic compositions.
The Layers of Artistry
Jose Margulis (b. 1970, Caracas, Venezuela) began his artistic journey with photography while studying Management in Venezuela. His early exploration of digital printing in a family-run business later evolved into a deep engagement with sculpting leading him to create intricate compositions using vibrant, layered acrylic sheets. His sculptures, whether freestanding, wall-mounted, or affixed to surfaces, serve as both standalone works and subjects for his photographic investigations. This symbiotic relationship between sculpture and photography generates a compelling dialogue between materiality, space, and color.
Strongly influenced by Venezuelan kinetic art, Margulis draws inspiration from Jesús Soto and Naum Gabo, particularly Gabo’s Linear Constructions in Space series. His work masterfully manipulates volume and light, creating optical illusions that shift with the viewer’s perspective. The interplay of translucent color, layered geometry, and precise spatial construction invites audiences into an immersive experience where perception becomes fluid and ever-changing.
Stories Told Through Color Explorations
Margulis' approach extends beyond form—his art is a philosophical exploration of multiple narratives, spatial relativity, and human interconnectedness. His bold use of vibrant hues, influenced by the tropical landscapes of Venezuela and his time in Mexico, further amplifies the emotional and kinetic energy of his compositions. By continuously cycling between sculpture and photography, he crafts a multidimensional discourse that transforms the way we see and experience art.
Exhibitions & Global Recognition
He has participated in numerous exhibitions and international art fairs. His works belong to institutional, corporate and private collections from Australia, China, Costa Rica, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and the United States.
Looking Forward
As J. Margulis continues to push the boundaries of geometric abstraction and sculptural photography, his future promises groundbreaking explorations in spatial perception, immersive installations, and innovative material applications—solidifying his legacy as a visionary in contemporary art.
