Alexi Torres Rebuilds Classical Mythology From a Soccer Ball

In Alexi Torres's "Game of Life" series, on view now at Carousel Fine Art’s Buckhead Village gallery, he applies his signature woven technique to the hexagonal and pentagonal geometry of a soccer ball, and uses it to rebuild figures drawn from classical sculpture: the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, Rodin’s Thinker, Canova’s Three Graces.

Torres was born in 1976 in Bermeja, a farming village in Cuba’s Matanzas province, and studied at the Escuela Provincial de Artes in Matanzas and the Escuela Nacional de Artes in Havana before immigrating to the United States in 2003. He now lives and works between Atlanta and Zancudo, Costa Rica, and begins and completes every canvas on a waning moon, a practice carried over from the agricultural rhythms of his childhood.

All eight paintings from the series are on view as part of The Beautiful Game, Carousel Fine Art’s 2026 World Cup exhibition running through July 31. With Atlanta hosting sixteen 2026 World Cup matches this summer, the "Game of Life" series arrives at a moment built for it. Inquire with the gallery to view available works from the series.

On View at Buckhead Village: David Yarrow’s Spring in Aspen

Drivers approaching Buckhead Village on Peachtree Road pass a billboard at the corner of West Paces Ferry Road built around a single photograph: a 1960s Cadillac convertible parked on a mountain road outside Aspen, Colorado, a woman leaning against the wheel, a wolf-like dog braced on the windshield beside her.

The image is Spring in Aspen, by David Yarrow, marking the literal entrance to Buckhead Village. David Yarrow was born in Glasgow in 1966. At twenty, working as a freelancer for The London Times, he photographed Diego Maradona being carried above the crowd after Argentina’s 1986 World Cup Final victory, an image since recognized as one of the three best-selling sports photographs in history. Today he is among the best-selling fine art photographers working anywhere, with prints regularly achieving strong results at Sotheby’s and a practice built on monumental, cinematically staged scenes of wildlife, landscape, and narrative.

Spring in Aspen joins several other Yarrow photographs now on view at Buckhead Village, among them The White Lady. Yarrow’s Maradona (1986), the centerpiece of "The Beautiful Game" exhibition, is also being shown this summer at the private members’ clubs Lion’s Head and Yebo during the 2026 World Cup.
