Artist Javier Leon Perez

Biography

“My textures are a poetry referring to the idea of infinity. The sensory poetry of my work is a form of message that relates, makes the intention, says, or points … but sometimes, it does not intend to say anything,” Javier Leon Perez

Who is Javier Leon Perez?

Javier Leon Perez is an artist whose style is defined by the eternal repetition of elements throughout the universe.

Born in Seville, Spain, Perez was classically trained at the École des Beaux-Arts there where he specialized in ceramics and sculpture before finishing his studies at the Complutense University of Madrid. Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, Pérez resonated with the rhythms found in nature and the cosmos. In turn, Javier Perez began creating work that reflects the fragile and ephemeral nature of the universe.

Perez's artistic style spans various mediums, ranging from painting to sculpture and installations. Yet no matter the medium, Perez's art visualizes the interplay between the order of the universe and it's fluidity, as well as the relationship between individual elements and the cohesive whole they form.

Through his medium of choice, Japanese paper, also known as 'washi,' Perez manifests the different phases of sensation and how these are correlated with external forces. Javier Perez's artworks are constantly changing, resembling the organic, cosmic, cyclical, and unpredictable nature of the world.

First folding, cutting, and multiplying small, individual units of washi, Perez then arranges these strips of paper in precise order. The result are works of art reflective of fluid organic shapes. Javier Leon Perez's art is reminiscent of the internal structures found in nature. While Perez draws inspiration from nature—its forms and rhythms—he interprets rather than replicates the organic forms.

Javier creates art with the intention to visualize an "atmosphere of unity," a cosmic flow attuned to human perception. The artist holds a deep regard for the viewer's experience, providing a canvas for them to project their own thoughts and emotions onto his intricate forms and patterns.
