Javier León Pérez

Biography

“My textures are a poetry referring to the idea of infinity. The sensory poetry of my work is a form of message that relates, makes the intention, says, or points … but sometimes, it does not intend to say anything. And it is in that silence when poetry acts as a fertile place where new possibilities arise. If the artwork contains a soul, it is capable of generating with its environment what I call ‘atmosphere of unity,’ and can create a cosmic flow that is sensitive to human perception,” Javier  Perez

Javier Leon Perez's artistry is defined by the eternal repetition of minute elements, resonating with the rhythms inherent in nature and the cosmos.

Born in Seville, Perez trained at the École des Beaux-Arts there where he specialized in ceramics and sculpture before finishing his studies at the Complutense University of Madrid. At a young age, Pérez worked as an assistant in a sculpture workshop. Inspired by Buddhist philosophy and Zen principles, Pérez creates work that emphasize the fragile and ephemeral nature of existence.

Pérez's artistic expression encompasses various mediums, ranging from painting to sculpture and installations. Central to his work is the interplay between the underlying order of the universe and fluidity, as well as the relationship between individual elements and the cohesive whole they form.

Through his medium of choice, Japanese paper, known as 'washi,' Perez explores its forms, light, and folds. Through hsi art, he manifests the different phases of human feeling and how these are correlated with external rhythms. His works are constantly changing resembling the organic, cosmic, cyclical, and unpredictable nature of the world – like art itself.

Through folding, cutting, and multiplying small, individual units of washi are arranged in precise order. As a result, Pérez's works are a profusion of fluid organic shapes reminiscent of the internal structures found in nature, such as the undulating petals of a flower. While Pérez draws inspiration from nature—its forms and rhythms—he interprets rather than replicates its essence.

Javier Perez creates art with the intention to cultivate an "atmosphere of unity," a cosmic flow attuned to human perception. Through his art, he invites viewers into a realm where they can fully immerse themselves. The artist holds a deep regard for the viewer's experience, providing a canvas for them to project their own thoughts and emotions onto his intricate forms and patterns.

Javier perceives his approach akin to a "skin," acting as a chamber that allows viewers to tune into their innermost thoughts and embark on a sensorial journey of self-discovery. Through the use of materials such as graphite on canvas flattened by an infinity of layers of primer, the artist investigates nature as an entity and personal nature, understanding creation as a means of knowledge.
