Punkmetender

Punkmetender is the artistic identity of Romain Lefebvre, who moved from France to Los Angeles at the age of eighteen and found his first artistic language in graffiti and street art. For nearly two decades, Lefebvre worked closely with Thierry Guetta, known as Mr. Brainwash, developing and producing work that brought Pop Art's familiar imagery into the energy and scale of street art. Lefebvre also appears in the acclaimed documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. Alongside this collaboration, he began developing a visual language of his own.

In 2017, Punkmetender's first three-dimensional butterfly mural brought that language into focus. Since then, the butterfly has become a defining element throughout his paintings, sculptural reliefs, murals, and installations. Emerging from layered paint and silkscreen imagery, the butterfly extends beyond the surface of the work and takes shape through materials including metal, resin, reflection, and light. As viewers move around the work, its shadows and surfaces shift with them, creating a dynamic, multi-dimensional experience.

The butterfly represents freedom, spirit, and beauty, and holds the central question at the heart of Punkmetender's practice: how can freedom be given form while remaining free? A butterfly can be made solid in stainless steel, yet remains inseparable from the possibility of flight. As the artist states, “Freedom disappears the moment it is possessed.” Punkmetender follows this idea across materials and scale, continually exploring the relationship between freedom, movement, and transformation.

Punkmetender's artistic mission has long revolved around freedom, vibrant color, mixed media, and spontaneity. His works embrace an authentic, graphic, and raw quality, often combining techniques from street art, graffiti, photography, and fashion. His imagery is frequently layered with spray paint, original photography, silkscreen, acrylic coatings, and three-dimensional elements, creating works that invite viewers to experience art beyond a traditional two-dimensional surface.

Punkmetender is also known for his photography, characterized by bold, bright colors and high-gloss embellishments. His work celebrates women, fashion, and style, while exploring desire, individuality, and the freedom to challenge conventional perceptions. Influenced by figures including Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Philippe Starck, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, and Salvador Dalí, he brings together elements of contemporary culture, fashion, Pop Art, and street art within his distinctive visual language.

Beyond the canvas, Punkmetender has turned the streets of Los Angeles and other environments into his medium, creating captivating murals and large-scale works. Whether working with photography, paint, metal, sculpture, or installation, his practice remains rooted in the same pursuit: giving form to freedom without ever fully containing it.
