Gaspard Mitz

Biography
Fench Contemporary artist, Gaspard Mitz, handcrafts unique art sculptures inspired by 1:87 scale model figures, that combines elements of art and music boxes to create his concept of "Box Stories," where miniature protagonists reimagine iconic paintings from various eras.

Self-taught artist, Gaspard Mitz stumbled upon his vocation by chance. With the idea of creating an original gift for a friend's birthday, he crafted a three-dimensional story that he placed in a case, merging elements of a music box and a sculpture. This marked the beginning of the artist's journey and the birth of his concept, "Box Stories."

Inspired by 1:87 scale model figures, Mitz envisions scenes where his miniature figures take center stage. The artist draws inspiration from art history, cinema, and contemporary games to breathe life into his miniature protagonists. Despite measuring only two centimeters, these figures reimagine iconic paintings from different eras, creating a scaled-down reality where they can surf the waves of Hokusai or respond to the muses of Roy Lichtenstein.

Presented in small groups of two or three, these miniatures manage to convey rich narratives. The stage for their adventures is confined to a box, featuring a restrained and refined decoration reminiscent of Japanese aesthetics. Mitz creates captivating naratives, infusing them with humor and poetry.

Every story box is a limited-edition piece that is handcrafted by Gaspard Mitz in Paris. Using materials such as wood, polystyrene, or paper, each piece is signed, titled, numbered and dated on the back.
