who is Evelyne Brader-Frank?
Evelyne Brader-Frank is a Swiss-Canadian sculptor internationally recognized for her reduced-abstract sculptures that celebrate the elegance and movement of the human form. Working primarily in stone, bronze, and polished steel, Evelyne Brader-Frank sculptures explore sensual curves, flowing silhouettes, and archetypal feminine figures that embody harmony, strength, and grace.
Born in Wettingen, Switzerland, Evelyne Brader-Frank's grandfather was a landscape painter and her brother a surrealist artist, influences that exposed her to drawing and painting through mediums such as pencil, watercolor, and airbrush. Although she initially pursued a banking education, in 1990, she enrolled in her first sculpture class, discovering that sculpture offered the freedom to express ideas in three dimensions.
Evelyne Brader-Frank is best known for her distinctive sculptural language defined by extreme formal reduction. Her contemporary figurative sculptures distill the human body into essential lines and volumes, creating works that are both minimal and expressive. Inspired primarily by the female form, her sculptures evoke sensual contours, expansive volumes, and a luminous sense of balance. Whether depicting voluptuous figures or slender, elongated silhouettes, Evelyne Brader-Frank’s work celebrates what she calls the “dance of curves.”
Stone remains central to her practice, particularly soapstone, which she describes as the material that best allows her sculptures to emanate warmth and life. Over the course of her career, she has expanded her artistic vocabulary to include bronze sculpture and polished steel sculpture, each material offering a distinct expressive quality. Bronze allows her to emphasize subtle details and classical form, while mirror-polished steel introduces reflections of light, color, and surrounding space, inviting viewers to see themselves within the artwork.
In 1994, Evelyne Brader-Frank moved from Switzerland to Alberta, Canada. During this time, she explored new sculptural formats and materials, including bronze, concrete, and ice, while refining her technical skills alongside prominent Canadian artists such as renowned ice sculptors Michael Rapati and Larry Andreoff. The experience helped establish her reputation as a leading contemporary sculptor working between Europe and North America.
A fascination with classical mythology also informs Evelyne Brader-Frank sculptures. Many of her works are titled after figures from Greek and Roman mythology, chosen to reflect the emotional character or symbolic spirit she perceives in each sculpture. Through these mythological references, her works connect timeless narratives of beauty, transformation, and humanity with contemporary sculptural form.
Today, Evelyne Brader-Frank sculptures are represented by leading galleries in Switzerland and Canada and are sought after by collectors for their timeless elegance and refined abstraction. Evelyne Brader-Frank currently lives and works near Zurich, Switzerland, where she continues to create contemporary sculptures that celebrate the beauty, strength, and expressive power of the human form.
