Artist Jean Daniel Lorieux
World-renowned French fashion photographer, Jean-Daniel Lorieux is known for his sunlit, fashion-forward, and cinematic shots that exude meticulous staging.
Who is Jean-Daniel Lorieux?
Jean-Daniel Lorieux is a fashion photographer whose photographic style encapsulates the spirit of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the golden age of fashion photography.
Born in 1937 Paris, Lorieux studied at the National School of Arts and Crafts and the René Simon Dramatic Art Course. Initially aspiring to become a filmmaker, the artist transitioned to photography after serving in the Algerian War as a military photographer.
After joining Studio Harcourt in 1964 and embarking on a freelance career, Lorieux's collaboration with prestigious fashion magazines such as Vogue, L'Officiel, and Harper's Bazaar propelled him into the limelight. His friendships with iconic photographers Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, and Irvin Penn, helped influence his artistic trajectory.
Jean-Daniel's photographic approach diverges from other trends and artists. Seeking out the allure of the sun-drenched beaches of the Bahamas, Seychelles, and Maldives, global outdoor locations have become signature elements of his style.
Throughout his career, Lorieux has worked with renowned figures such as political figures like Jacques Chirac and Nelson Mandela and Hollywood stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sharon Stone, and Brooke Shields. Lorieux's impact extends beyond editorial work, in which he brought his talent to advertising campaigns for renowned brands including Dior, Lanvin, Rabanne, Ricci, Céline, and Cardin.
Beyond fashion photography, Lorieux paints captivating portraits. Once working alongside pop-art painter Andy Warhol (at Andy Warhol's Factory in New York City), Lorieux's creative vision is influenced by beauty, action, desire, and humor. His artistic vision consistently visualizes his belief in the transformative power of staging, both on and off the set.
Recognized for his contributions to the arts, Jean-Daniel Lorieux has received numerous accolades, including being knighted in the Order of Arts and Letters and awarded the Legion of Honor for his distinguished service during the Algerian War. His works have been exhibited extensively worldwide, with notable showcases in Paris, Monaco, Cannes, Moscow, and beyond.
