Artist Gaspard Mitz
French artist, Gaspard Mitz, combines elements of art and music boxes to create his concept of "Box Stories," in which miniature protagonists act out iconic paintings from various eras.
Who is Gaspard Mitz?
Gaspard Mitz is a self-taught French Contemporary artist who is knonw for creating art sculptures inspired by 1:87 scale model figures.
Gaspard Mitz stumbled upon his vocation by chance. Struggling to find the perfect birthday gift for a friend, Mitz suddenly had the idea of creating an original gift by sculpting a three-dimensional story. Inspired by the elements of a music box and sculpture, Mitz placed his sculpture in a glass case and thus marked the beginning of the artist's journey and the birth of his concept, "Box Stories."
Inspired by 1:87 scale model figures, Mitz sculpts enclosed narratives where his miniature figures take center stage. The artist draws inspiration from art history, cinema, and contemporary games to create different stories for his miniature protagonists. Measuring only two centimeters in size, Mitz's figures reimagine iconic paintings from different eras.
The result are interactive scaled-down realities, where miniature protagonists can surf the waves of Hokusai or talk to the muses of Roy Lichtenstein. Sculpting these narratives within a restrained medium of the story-box, Mitz's interactive sculptures are reminiscent of Japanese aesthetics and theme of restraint.
Despite regulating his miniatures to small groups of two or three, Gaspard Mitz is able to convey rich narratives. While the stages for these miniature adventures are confined to a box, Mitz creates captivating narratives, infusing them with humor and poetry. Every story box is a limited-edition piece that is handcrafted by Gaspard Mitz in Paris. Using materials such as wood, polystyrene, or paper, each piece is signed, titled, numbered and dated on the back.
