Who is Brendan Murphy?

Born in Indiana in 1971, Brendan Murphy is a painter and sculptor whose works of art draw inspiration from society, mathematics, and his own imagination. Murphy's unique style has gained a worldwide reputation for its thought-provoking aesthetic in both canvas and sculpture mediums.

 

Before becoming an artist, Brendan was first a professional basketball player in Europe and later a Wall Street trader in New York. Following the tragic events of 9/11, Murphy left finance and fully immersed himself in painting and sculpture.

 

Brendan Murphy's characteristic style involves the recurring use of mathematical equations and symbols in both his paintings and sculptures. Sometimes referred to as chalkboard-style artworks due to its presence of scribble like symbols and equations, his works poise questions about contemporary society and its future. Brendan Murphy sculpts a variety of subjects but a recurring theme is his "Boonji Spacemen" which feature colorful sculpted astronauts decorated with mathematical equations and symbols.

 

In 2021, Murphy launched his "Boonji Project," a digital art collection of 11,111 unique NFTs, available on the Ethereum blockchain. This project, which digitalized his iconic "Boonji Spaceman" sculptures and abstract paintings, became the largest NFT primary sale in history, raising over $15.5 million.

 

By translating his physical art into digital avatars, Brendan became the first artist to create an avatar collection based on his entire body of work, pushing the boundaries of both traditional art and the digital art world.
